Is Rehabilitation Safe During COVID-19?

“Our goal is to get patients in and out as quickly, and yet safely, as possible,” said Clarissa Frail, Healthcare SeniorLife Counselor at Otterbein Cridersville.

We’ve changed nearly aspect of our daily processes during COVID-19 to make sure our residents and employees stay as safe as possible.

In addition to increased sanitation and cleaning, we’re also taking steps like requiring masks, having employees wear gloves and gowns when in contact with a resident, and requiring COVID-19 testing for any resident coming to Otterbein.

When a new resident enters, they’ll stay in isolation for a few days to ensure they aren’t carrying an illness.

You can read more about Otterbein’s steps toward preventing COVID-19 here.

How Long Do I Have to Stay?

The length of your stay will depend on your specific needs. Patients who had knee or hip replacements, for example, usually stay a maximum of 14 days. Other stays may be shorter or longer based on the type of illness, injury, or surgery you had and what your doctor recommends.

Keep in mind that the choice is entirely yours as to how long you remain in rehabilitation and therapy. While we want you to be as safe and healthy as possible and will make recommendations as such, you’re not required to stay for any particular length of time.

Are There Private Rooms?

Yes! All of the inpatient rehab and therapy rooms at Otterbein Cridersville are private and include a bathroom.

Each room also has Wi-Fi access and a TV, so you can stay connected while you’re here.

What is the Food Like?

We make sure every rehabilitation guest has plenty of options to choose from for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Snacks are also readily available throughout the day.

If you have a favorite snack or drink, and it doesn’t interfere with any special diets you’re on, feel free to bring it along with you. Which brings us to our next topic…

What Should I Bring to Inpatient Rehabilitation?

Pack for success - and for comfort. Remember, you’ll be participating in rehab exercises and/or physical therapy while you’re here.

Clarissa recommends bringing the following items along with you:

  • Comfortable clothing you can be active in. If you’ve had surgery on your legs, consider wearing shorts instead of long pants. Activewear like sweatpants, t-shirts, and jackets is appropriate.
  • Comfortable footwear. Supportive, non-slip sneakers can be a comfortable option that will provide stability as you do your therapy.
  • Personal care items. While Otterbein can provide the basics, many people like to bring their own brand of toothpaste or shampoo to feel more at-home.
  • A favorite blanket or pillow. Otterbein rooms include bed linens and blankets, but you can bring your own for extra comfort.
  • Activities or electronics. You’ll have free time between therapy sessions, so feel free to bring along books, magazines, simple craft materials, or a laptop or tablet to help you stay occupied. Don’t forget a charger!

What Will My Schedule Be Like?

According to Clarissa, your specific needs will dictate your daily schedule. Much of your time will be spent on therapy and rehabilitation sessions with our professionals. That might include physical, occupational, speech, or other types of therapies.

You’ll also have plenty of free time to spend as you wish, so bring along any of your favorite activities to help pass the time.

What Happens When I Go Home?

We make sure you’re set up for success when it’s time to discharge you.

A few days before you leave, one of our team members may visit your home with you to help identify ways to make your living quarters safer and more comfortable when you return.

We’ll stay in touch with you once you go home, including a check-in call a few days later to ensure you’re adjusting. We can also help set up any additional services you may need, such as home health or Meals on Wheels.
