Residents at Otterbein have the opportunity to get involved in many ways — from venturing off-campus for outings to joining guest lectures to enjoying the woodworking or art studios. Many residents also serve as volunteers on campus.

At Otterbein Lebanon, the Shaker Cellar is our on-campus secondhand store, where residents or community members may drop off household items to donate. All proceeds benefit the Benevolent Fund at Otterbein, ensuring residents whose funds are depleted can remain in the community.

Watch our recent video to hear from the volunteers on what makes the Shaker Cellar so special.

Why Volunteer on Campus?

Residents say volunteering gives them something to do during the day that’s engaging. It’s also a great way to meet neighbors and new friends.

“It's been a way to meet a lot of people, make lots of friends,” said volunteer and Otterbein resident Carol. “It's interesting because you never know what you're going to find. I have to say, I’ve probably bought more than I should have since I've been here, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Another regular volunteer, Carolyn, added, “The other volunteers get to be like family after a while. And then the customers come in, and we love to help them.”
