Residents at Otterbein SeniorLife St. Marys look forward to their Olympic Games event every year. Each year is unique with different activities, residents, and entertainment, but one thing remains constant - the joy and sense of purpose brought to all involved.

“I cannot tell you how many people came to me and said how much joy that brought to them,” said Yvonne Miller, director of resident life at Otterbein St. Marys.

Fun Activities and Opening/Closing Ceremonies

The Otterbein Olympics featured an opening ceremony complete with a torch, flag bearer, and entertainment. A variety of events were held each day of the one-week-long Olympics, and it ended with a closing ceremony where medals were awarded.

Yvonne explained that some of the activities included bocce ball, ping pong, shuffleboard, and basketball. There were plenty of opportunities for residents to try something new or participate in an activity they hadn’t done for a while.

With pom-poms energetically waving through the air, good sportsmanship was on display by a cheering crowd of residents and staff.

When asked about the residents’ enthusiasm for the Otterbein Olympics, Stacy Klosterman, marketing director, explained it well: “...their desire to want to be competitive - their desire to want to support and cheer each other on.”

“Yvonne and her life enrichment team - they just continue to do everything in their power to give the residents more, to meet their desire of wanting to do things they maybe thought they’d never get to do again in their lifetime,” added Stacy.
