Otterbein SeniorLife is excited to share our plans to affiliate with Kendal at Granville, located in Granville, Ohio. The affiliation is expected to be finalized in fall 2021.

Both Otterbein and Kendal at Granville are non-profit senior care organizations that provide a wide array of services, including independent living, assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing, and rehabilitative care.

Otterbein and Kendal at Granville - Like-Minded Organizations

In making the announcement, Otterbein SeniorLife board chair, Mel Miller, said, “Our board could not pass up the opportunity to affiliate with a like-minded organization, also focused on a resident-driven model of operations, and committed to exceptional stewardship. We believe the synergies of our organizations blend very well and will contribute greatly to continued excellent care and support for residents and working experiences for employees.”

Words from Otterbein’s CEO

Jill Wilson, president and CEO of Otterbein SeniorLife, said, “We are so very pleased to join forces with the Kendal at Granville. Their track record with resident, person-centric, engagement, and service excellence, along with Otterbein’s 109 years of enhancing the quality of life and holistic growth of older persons, will strengthen our organization and open up all kinds of strategic opportunities to carry out our mission.”

Words from Kendal at Granville’s Leadership Team

Kendal at Granville board chair Molly Ingold said, “The boards of directors and leadership teams of Kendal Corporation and Kendal at Granville have worked collaboratively to ensure this long-standing community we love continues to thrive, both now and far into the future.”

Ingold went on to say, “Following an exploratory process, our board unanimously agreed that Otterbein offered the best opportunity to ensure the long-term viability of our community. Otterbein SeniorLife is clearly one of the premier senior living providers in the nation, and their commitment to mission and excellence aligns flawlessly with our community’s culture and philosophy.  The fact that Otterbein already operates 20 senior care organizations in Ohio (and one in Indiana), and their home office location is less than two hours away, are added bonuses.”

Sean Kelly, President and CEO of Kendal Corporation, added, “We at Kendal recognize that today we live in a dynamic world that brings with it change and evolution. It is the consistent seeking of a better way that is bedrock to Kendal and its originating values. We are confident that this affiliation, with Otterbein SeniorLife’s model of association, is more in line with the needs of Kendal at Granville, and is the best path forward for the residents, their families, staff, and the broader community. We trust in Otterbein’s ability to continue providing residents with the high-quality services they have experienced under the leadership of Kendal, and we will support Granville and Otterbein through this process to ensure a seamless transition for everyone.”

Ensuring a Bright Future for Both Organizations

Doug Helman, Kendal at Granville Executive Director, said, "The affiliation with Otterbein gives the Granville Community a number of advantages for future growth and success. These include a vision to reposition the community and increase investment in the campus, both the result of enhanced access to debt restructuring and capital. By joining forces with a large, multi-site entity, the Granville community can increase its resources and purchasing power, which ultimately leads to providing enhanced facilities and excellence in service.”

According to Helman, even strong communities, like Kendal at Granville, are more susceptible today due to constant changes in senior care. He went on to clearly state, “The Kendal Corporation is an excellent organization and served the Granville community well for several years. The team will forever be grateful for the start Kendal provided us, the advice from the Kendal leadership team, and the engagement of the Kendal Corporation provided as we moved through the exploratory process.”

What to Expect Moving Forward

In the affiliation, Otterbein SeniorLife will become the sole member of the Granville community. In keeping with the standard already in place with all Otterbein communities, the Otterbein Granville SeniorLife Community will continue to retain the current staff, leadership team, local board of directors; but now with support from a home office team to enhance leverage for sales, marketing, communications, financial analyses, strategic planning, procurement, and so on. The current balance sheet remains intact and investments will be used solely in support of Otterbein Granville.
