Effective immediately, Otterbein SeniorLife will officially become a member of The Green House Project®.
In 2001, nursing home reformer Dr. Bill Thomas had a radical idea. Instead of living in nursing home institutions, people should be living in real homes. That vision was officially birthed by Mississippi Methodist Senior Services in 2003.
In 2005, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation brought funding to establish The Green House Project to advance small house development across the country.
Dr. Thomas’ vision was also the basis for Otterbein’s small house ministry, starting at Marblehead in 2007 and growing to 10 different locations, with a 90-bed expansion project currently underway. Otterbein is currently the largest provider of small house care in the country.
With much attention focused on nursing homes due to COVID-19, and the collective experience of both Otterbein and The Green House Project, we believe the timing is right for us to come together to advance our common goals by sharing best practices, extending research and expanding together our like-minded views on innovation, and liberation when it comes to the future of senior care.
Continuing Partnership With Otterbein and The Green House Project
As a member, Otterbein will be entitled to use The Green House Project trademark for our small houses. Membership includes access to educational opportunities; access to the peer network website; targeted webinars and newsletters; peer-to-peer connections facilitated by The Green House Project; and support for the small home care model through public policy initiatives at the state and federal level.
We have already begun working together. Otterbein has been participating in COVID-19 research conducted by the Green House Project, resulting in more than 50 positive press hits in prominent national, international, and local outlets.
